Hi, it’s me, your pal the ADOT Highway Hawk. I look out for safety, and that includes keeping highways and roads clean.

Happy New Year and Happy New Decade! Do you know what a decade is? It is ten years. A lot can change in ten years on Arizona highways.

Since the year 2000 ADOT has opened nearly 75 miles of new freeways and worked to open new lanes along existing freeways like US 260 and Interstates 10 and 17.

In the last decade ADOT added new layers of rubberized asphalt to more than 100 miles of concrete pavement. Rubberized asphalt comes from millions of old tires that have been shredded as part of a recycling program. Small pieces of rubber are melted into hot liquid and combined with small rocks to create a less-noisy surface to drive on.This special mixture keeps thousands of tires out of landfills.

How do you think transportation will change in the next ten years?

Write Boomer a letter with your transportation ideas and I may use them in a column!
