Highway HawkHi, it’s me, your pal the ADOT Highway Hawk. I look out for safety, and that includes keeping highways and roads clean. I Don’t Trash Arizona! Litter does not belong on our roads and streets.

Do you know the difference between dust storms, dust devils and monsoon thunderstorms?

Dust storms usually happen in the summer but they can happen any time of year and are very hard to predict. Dust storms happen when wind combines with dry earth.

A dust devil is a swirling column of air that forms on hot sunny days when hot air near the ground meets cooler air above it. Dust devils are not mini-tornadoes.

Monsoon season occurs during the summer months usually between July and September. Monsoon thunderstorms can pack winds of more than 60 miles an hour.

For more information about dust storms visit www.azdot.gov and look for our video on the home page, or click on ADOT and the Community and look for Dust Storms.

Check the weather forecast on line before traveling long distances in Arizona.
Visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website for Arizona at weather.gov/phoenix, look for monsoon safety.

Special thanks to meteorologist Craig Ellis!
