Highway HawkHi, it’s me, your pal the ADOT Highway Hawk. I look out for safety, and that includes keeping highways and roads clean.

Spring time weather in Arizona can be nice for traveling. May is a busy month for residents, visitors and the Arizona Department of Transportation. I see a lot of litter along our roads and that can be dangerous for motorists, the environment and other creatures that live in our state. As you travel state roads and highways here are some questions for you to talk about with your families and friends. See if you can answer them!

    1. Why do people litter?
    • People litter because they don’t care.
    • People litter because they see other people do it.
    • People litter because they think someone else will pick up after them.
    2. What is the number one item littered on roads and streets?
    • Cigarette butts
    • Paper
    • Plastic
    3. What can you do to put a stop to littering?
    • Decide not to litter.
    • Talk to your friends about the litter problem in your community.
    • Get a litter bag for your family car.
