Help Your Child Be a Success

Summer is officially over, and most students are starting a new school year. Now that the back-to-school excitement has worn off, what can you do to ensure the best possible academic year for your child? Let’s start by looking backwards.

What was school like last year for your son or daughter? What were the obstacles or the frustrations he or she faced? Did your child do as well in school as he or she should have? If last year’s grades were less than stellar, chances are your child will perform even worse this year—unless you the parent do some things differently.

kids First, let’s take a look at your child’s “plate.” Is your 16-year-old trying to work 20 hours a week while going to school? Maybe that’s not a good idea. Is your child on a traveling sports team that requires late-night practices and weekends out of town? Maybe that’s too much. If work, sports, friends or a myriad of activities is getting in the way of academics, I vote we lessen the activities and focus on the academics.

College athletes in Division 1 sports have an awful lot going on. But do you know what every major university does to help freshman athletes? They let them take a course during the summer session.

They also provide tutors. Yes, they put a little football in their heads as well, but they are giving them a running start.

You can do the same for your child.

Look into summer academic classes or other programs that can give him or her a leg up in math, science or whatever subject he or she needs some extra support in to succeed. If you never thought of hiring a tutor for your child, this might be a good time to employ one. Give your kids a running start on this year. Not only will they not fall behind, they’ll actually be ahead of the game!

It is also a good time to let your child’s teacher know you are very interested in your student’s progress. Make it clear that you are willing to do whatever it takes at home to make this a good school year.

Your kids don’t need a tow truck to pull them through this next grade. They might just need a gentle push. You, parents, are the ones that can pull the right strings to make sure that push is beneficial to everyone.
