Animal Care Center Shows Off Its Dramatic Improvements & Expansion
It was a time to celebrate as VIP’s cut the ribbon to the newly renovated Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) on April 27.
Dogs up for adoption have new kennels, new floors, self-filling water bowls—even a new sewer system. Cats at the shelter have a new adoption area, and everyone is breathing good, clean air.
“It’s a great day!” announced Shelter Manager Kim Janes. The finished project adds a new 30-kennel wing, a nicely landscaped outdoor visiting area, renovated existing areas and a high-efficiency air conditioning system.
Voters in Pima County approved a $3 million bond plus an additional $1.6 million from bond interest money to pay for the makeover, according to Pima County Supervisor Sharon Bronson. All the work took just over a year to complete.
“Government can work and can get things done. As a result of these changes, the most important thing is we’re going to improve the health, safety and comfort of all the animals in our care (here),” Bronson says.
Janes is touched by the dramatic improvements, especially “how bright the facility is and how happy the animals are now—it’s clear in their face; it’s clear in their expressions, and it’s clear in their eyes,” he says.
PACC got rid of its outdated swamp cooler system, which Janes explains wasn’t healthy for the animals.
The new air conditioning and venting system makes a huge difference. Six times every hour, the air conditioning switches out old air in the building with fresh air.
Fe Tom, head of The Architecture Company, handled the design. He points out that a special epoxy floor in the kennels and the improved plumbing make cleaning the kennels much easier and cuts down on bad smells. The new wing of kennels can hold 60 or more dogs. These kennels have an indoor and outdoor area, so the dogs can go back and forth.
Visitors can put prospective pooches on a leash and go into the courtyard with visiting areas.
PACC officials wanted to make it a more pleasant experience for visitors who are picking out a new furry-faced member of the family. Hopes are high that having happier animals and folks spending more time at PACC will mean more adoptions.
With spring here, PACC is quickly filling with animals, especially puppies and kittens, Janes points out.
For a limited time, PACC is cutting its adoption fees in half!
Adoptions include spaying/neutering a microchip, first shots and a free vet check.
