Fall is here, and that means spooky season for some people. Fortunately for those with an interest in ghosts, Arizona has some noteworthy spots with reported sightings!
Jerome was once known as the “Wickedest Town in the West.” The mining town was founded in 1876 and was once the fourth largest city in Arizona. Jerome was designated as a National Historic District in 1967. These days, it’s home to around 450 residents and is a popular spot for artists and tourists—as well as those who want to visit the Jerome Grand Hotel!
The 25-room hotel was originally opened as the town’s hospital in 1927 and converted to a hotel in 1994 after decades of being closed. There are reports of odd occurrences, occasional sightings, and communications from the former head nurse. The hotel’s owner won’t say whether the hotel is haunted, but has said that if there are spirits, they must be happier in a hotel than a hospital!
For another frightfully fun spot in Northern Arizona, guests can spend the night at Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff. The hotel is known for some strange happenings, including one alleged resident ghost who likes to knock, announcing room service delivery—only to disappear when the guest opens the door!
If you head southeast to the Mule Mountains, you can find yourself in Bisbee. While it was the largest city in the Arizona territory in the early 1900s, today the city is a welcoming community with a mix of art, music and history.
The first mining claim was staked in 1877. Mining in the mountains turned out to be quite the successful adventure, producing loads of gold, copper and silver!
Today’s visitors can check out the Copper Queen Mine, which has been closed since 1975. Former miners guide visitors through the underground mine past abandoned equipment to learn about how the mine operated. For a potential ghost sighting with four paws, check out the Hotel La More—where a charming resident ghost cat sometimes makes his playful presence known! Adventures await all throughout our great state!
