On March 3, Caitlin Clark became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball history, reaching a mind-boggling 3,685 career points.The University of Iowa point guard surpassed “Pistol” Pete Maravich, who ended his college career with 3,667 points 54 years ago.
After setting the all-time leading scorer record for NCAA women’s basketball in February, Clark quickly went on to break another record—becoming Fanatics’ top-selling college athlete since the online retailer began selling collegiate athletic apparel in 2022. Her shirts and jerseys have been flying off the shelves!
Clark is on pace to break yet another record this season: the all-time NCAA men’s and women’s basketball scoring record. Pete Maravich scored 3,667 points playing for Louisiana State University and went on to a successful career in the NBA. Now Clark has announced that she intends on turning pro at the end of this season.
With Clark scoring an average of 33 points per game this season, she’s expected to add lots more points to set the new NCAA career scoring mark this season. All of Clark’s achievements and positive attention for the University of Iowa led the Iowa House to pass a RESOLUTION declaring Feb. 22 Caitlin Clark Day in Iowa!
So, what’s next for Clark? She is a senior but is eligible to remain in college for one more year. Opting to stay in college means she could take advantage of the name, image and likeness (NIL) ruling that allows college athletes to make money off their personal brand. Clark has signed deals with Gatorade, Nike and State Farm—and these partnerships have earned her an estimated $818,000. Not a bad deal while playing college basketball!
Clark, if she enters the 2024 WNBA draft, is expected to be the first overall pick. WNBA legend Sue Bird spoke about Clark’s professional potential recently and said she believes Clark can be a WNBA All-Star in her first year. The top salary in the WNBA currently maxes out at around $250,000.
